Equivalence relations and the reinforcement contingency.

چکیده
Where do equivalence relations come from? One possible answer is that they arise directly from the reinforcement contingency. That is to say, a reinforcement contingency produces two types of outcome: (a) 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, or n-term units of analysis that are known, respectively, as operant reinforcement, simple discrimination, conditional discrimination, second-order conditional discrimination, and so on; and (b) equivalence relations that consist of ordered pairs of all positive elements that participate in the contingency. This conception of the origin of equivalence relations leads to a number of new and verifiable ways of conceptualizing equivalence relations and, more generally, the stimulus control of operant behavior. The theory is also capable of experimental disproof.

Equivalence class formation via identity matching to sample and simple discrimination with class-specific consequences
Human participant performances often show evidence of learning untrained relations when conditional discrimination training between physically dissimilar stimuli is conducted. These emergent relations document equivalence class formation. The current study investigated whether class-specific consequences (i.e. the specific reinforcers used for each potential class during training) also join the...
متن کاملFUZZY SUBGROUPS AND CERTAIN EQUIVALENCE RELATIONS
In this paper, we study an equivalence relation on the set of fuzzysubgroups of an arbitrary group G and give four equivalent conditions each ofwhich characterizes this relation. We demonstrate that with this equivalencerelation each equivalence class constitutes a lattice under the ordering of fuzzy setinclusion. Moreover, we study the behavior of these equivalence classes under theaction of a...
متن کاملSpeed contingencies, number of stimulus presentations, and the nodality effect in equivalence class formation.
Two experiments compared performances on conditional discrimination tasks using single-participant designs with and without speed contingencies. Experiment 1 was a systematic replication of Spencer and Chase (1996). Experiment 2 presented equal numbers of training and testing trials. In each experiment, 2 female undergraduates participated. Each formed three five-member and three seven-member e...
متن کاملOn certain semigroups of transformations that preserve double direction equivalence
Let TX be the full transformation semigroups on the set X. For an equivalence E on X, let TE(X) = {α ∈ TX : ∀(x, y) ∈ E ⇔ (xα, yα) ∈ E}It is known that TE(X) is a subsemigroup of TX. In this paper, we discussthe Green's *-relations, certain *-ideal and certain Rees quotient semigroup for TE(X).
متن کاملInteractions Between Equivalence Relations and the Development of Analytic Units
Two experiments investigated possible interactions between existing equivalence relations among stimuli and the acquisition of simple discriminations involving the same stimuli. During the first phase of Experiment 1, two adult humans learned two sets of six conditional relations among arbitrary visual stimuli designed to produce two independent sets of three, three-member equivalence classes (...
